More About This Course

The New Curriculum for Wales represents one of the most significant shifts in Welsh education for a generation, placing greater emphasis on learner autonomy, real‑world relevance, and seamless progression from early years through to post‑16 pathways. This course helps participants move beyond the headlines to truly understand how the curriculum is structured and why it has been designed in this way. Through clear explanations and practical examples, you will explore how the Four Core Purposes shape every aspect of teaching and learning supporting children and young people to become ambitious, capable learners; enterprising, creative contributors; ethical, informed citizens; and healthy, confident individuals.

A central focus of the course is helping educators develop confidence with the new Progression Steps, which have replaced traditional Key Stages. You’ll examine how these steps support a continuum of learning that is flexible, developmentally appropriate, and responsive to individual pupil needs. By looking closely at each of the six Areas of Learning and Experience (AoLEs), you will gain a practical understanding of how “What Matters” statements act as the foundation for curriculum planning, enabling rich, purposeful learning experiences that build knowledge, skills, and dispositions over time.

Whether you are a classroom teacher, middle leader, senior leader, or governor, this course provides the clarity and practical insight needed to engage with curriculum reform confidently. Participants will leave with a solid grasp of national expectations alongside strategies for applying curriculum principles in their own school or setting. Ultimately, the aim is to empower practitioners to design learning that is coherent, creative, and genuinely centred on the needs of every learner.
