This course provides essential knowledge to help professionals understand, recognise and respond to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). As a serious safeguarding concern, a form of child abuse and a criminal offence in the UK, FGM can have devastating physical, emotional and psychological consequences for those affected. Learners will explore what FGM is, the different types of procedures, why it may be practised, and the lasting impact it can have on children and young people.

Through engaging content, practical examples and realistic safeguarding scenarios, the course examines the key risk factors, warning signs and indicators that may suggest a child is at risk of, or has experienced, FGM. Learners will develop a clear understanding of their role in identifying concerns and taking prompt, appropriate action to protect those at risk.

The course also explains the legal framework surrounding FGM, including reporting duties and safeguarding responsibilities.
