More About This Course
The course is divided into two parts.
In Part 1, learners work through a series of safeguarding scenarios designed to test their knowledge and understanding of how to respond to different situations. There is then a multiple-choice knowledge assessment to be completed, in which the learner must score 80% or above to complete this section.
Once Part 1 has been completed, Part 2 begins with a short video outlining the latest changes to Keeping Children Safe in Education and highlighting the key safeguarding responsibilities of professionals working with children and young people. Following this, learners are asked to confirm that they have read the latest KCSIE guidance before completing a final assessment focused specifically on the guidance and its requirements.
What is required of schools, MATS and education settings?
Schools and education settings have a responsibility to ensure that staff not only read Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE), but understand how its requirements apply to their role and responsibilities.
KCSIE 2026 states that governing bodies and proprietors should have mechanisms in place to assist staff to understand and discharge their safeguarding responsibilities. This means that simply asking staff to confirm that they have read the guidance does not, on its own, demonstrate that they understand what it means for their practice.
This is reflected in Ofsted’s approach to safeguarding. Ofsted states that inspectors will consider “how leaders make sure that staff have the relevant knowledge and skills to safeguard children effectively” and that “all staff should be aware of the indicators of abuse and know what to do if they have concerns about a child.”
The Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) Knowledge Check 2026 provides an opportunity for schools and education settings to support and evidence staff understanding. It assesses knowledge of the key requirements in Part One of KCSIE 2026 and explores how these requirements translate into practical safeguarding responsibilities when working with children and young people.
The knowledge check is therefore designed to go beyond simply recording that staff have read the guidance, helping settings to identify whether staff understand the key safeguarding messages and know how they should respond when concerns arise.
