Teachers and school leaders know how important it is for students to understand how their exams are marked and why grades look the way they do. Yet explaining the grading process, from marking to grade boundaries, can be tricky, especially under time pressure.
That’s why Ofqual’s newly published classroom and assembly resources are such a welcome addition for educators across England. These ready-to-use tools are designed to support teachers, headteachers, and senior leadership teams to confidently demystify grading for students preparing for their GCSEs and A levels.
The pack includes:
A lesson plan that can be delivered in around 15–20 minutes, helping students understand the key steps in marking and grading, why grade boundaries change each year, and how fairness and consistency are maintained.
An assembly presentation for a quick 5-minute overview, complete with suggested speaking notes for school leaders.
Both resources are designed to bust common myths for example, that examiners know which school a student attends or that there’s a fixed limit on top grades, and help learners feel more confident and informed.
In a time when students look to their schools for clear, trustworthy explanations of assessment, these resources make it easier than ever to bring clarity to a complex topic. They’re ready to use with minimal preparation, making them ideal for tutor time, PSHE sessions, or whole-school assemblies.
